Earlier this year, St John Fisher College netball teams competed in QC Cup, a state-wide catholic schools’ competition. This competition was to be the start of a winning streak for the netballers who brought home gold in the junior, intermediate and senior divisions.

These champions went on to form the QISSN netball team travelling to Bundaberg last month to take part in the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball (QISSN) competition.

This is the largest netball carnival in the state with 64 teams from secondary schools across the state competing in the week-long carnival. The competition is open, with most schools entering teams made up predominantly of members from Year 11 and 12.

The 2019 St John Fisher College team was one of the youngest teams competing at the carnival consisting of year 9 and 10 students with only one year 12 student.

Despite their age disadvantage, team captain Courtney Winter led the division 7 team to gold, continuing their 2019 winning streak, and leaving the competition undefeated.

Erin Trembearth was awarded Most Valuable Player for the week with strong potential for the upcoming Vicki Wilson Netball carnival where the team will compete again.

St John Fisher College Netball Team Coach Bernie Toohey said the team showed amazing spirit with a beautiful display of grace and sportsmanship throughout the carnival.

Principal Cathy Galvin remarked at the generous support of parent Kimberly Young of Petrie Real Estate who sponsored the QISSN team, supplying sports bags, backpacks and towels for the eager netballers.

“It is encouraging to see the whole college community get behind the girls who were fantastic ambassadors for women’s sport and St John Fisher College,” Ms Galvin said.

The netballers are now in-training for the Vicki Wilson Met North competition to be held on August 15 in Pine Rivers where they will compete in the Junior and Senior divisions. For the past two years St John Fisher College’s Junior team has won the Vicki Wilson Shield and represented Met North in the State Final.

Coach Bernie Toohey is confident in the girl’s ability and says they have a winning attitude.

The netball community is strong at St John Fisher College, with parent Gary Pashen recently appointed as head coach for USC Thunder. Making his debut in the Sapphire Series in June; Mr Pashen is the only male coach in the league, joined by manager Mr Toohey.
