Stuartholme’s approach to transitioning to Secondary School

Transitioning from Junior School to Secondary School is a significant milestone, one filled with excitement and challenges.

At Stuartholme School, a Catholic Independent day and boarding school for Years 5-12, we are committed to ensuring that our new students step into this new chapter smoothly and confidently.

From the moment students set foot on our grounds, they are welcomed into a warm and inclusive environment. The transition process begins well before the first day of school with an Orientation Program designed to familiarise them with the school layout, routines, and key staff members. This early exposure helps reduce anxiety and fosters a strong sense of belonging.

We also understand the crucial role parents play during this time. Research indicates that parents and caregivers have the most significant influence on how smoothly their child transitions to high school. To support this, we host Parent Information Sessions both the year before students start at Stuartholme and at the beginning of the school year. These sessions equip parents with the knowledge and tools they need to effectively support their children.

At Stuartholme, the partnership between families and the school is integral to a successful transition. While schools play a key role, the efforts of parents in fostering consistency in expectations and routines are essential. Our Year 7 Camp, positioned at the beginning of the year, is an important element that helps students forge connections and friendships with their peers.

Year 7 boarder Harley says: “Although I felt nervous moving away from home, I was excited to meet new people and learn about different cultures. Living in boarding is fun, and I love decorating my room with photos from home. I’ve learned so much since coming to Stuartholme.”

Sister Suzanne Cook, from Society of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ), aptly captures the essence of Stuartholme’s approach.

“The essence of a Sacred Heart school is that it is deeply concerned for each student’s total development: spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical.”

Stuartholme prioritises not only a tailored curriculum and learning support but also effective wellbeing structures to give every student the best chance to flourish.

At Stuartholme, we understand the significance of transitioning to high school. Our dedicated program and supportive community ensure that this journey is as smooth as possible, and we are proud of how our students embrace this new chapter with enthusiasm and resilience.
