Mr Peter Slattery, Director of Junior School, reveals how passion, creativity and purpose are at the heart of education at The McDonald College.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” – William Butler Yeats

At The McDonald College Junior School, that fire burns brightly. Each day, our campus hums with energy—students moving with purpose, classrooms alive with creativity and a sense that something extraordinary is always unfolding.

As I arrive each morning, I’m reminded of four simple, yet powerful values displayed at our entrance:

  • We value Passion
  • We value Humility
  • We value Commitment
  • We value Honour

These are more than mottos. They shape the way our students learn, perform, compete and grow.

Passion in Action

Passion at The McDonald College is not confined to the arts—it shines through every aspect of school life. Earlier this year, Skylah (Year 6) balanced her studies while performing in a demanding season of Annie the Musical. Ken (Year 6) travelled through Europe with Tennis Australia, testing his skills on an international stage. Angela (Year 6) achieved remarkable recognition overseas, winning Gold at the Korea Ballet Association Competition and taking out the Grand Prize across all age groups at the Seoul City Ballet Company Competition.

Eden (Year 4) proudly represented Australia in Irish Dancing in the USA, while students in our Voyager Tennis Stream competed across Tasmania, Melbourne, Canberra, and Bateman’s Bay. From stages to courts, our students have sung, danced, acted, and competed with determination, showing that passion fuels achievement.

Just as inspiring are the students who, closer to home, have quietly dedicated themselves to their studies, building strong foundations and growing into thoughtful, capable young people.

Balancing Innovation with Imagination

In 2025, education is evolving rapidly with digital tools and AI transforming how children learn. At The McDonald College, we believe in balance. Amid innovation, we continue to value the simple joys of reading, writing, and meaningful conversation.

A recent collaboration between Year 1 and 2 students and our Secondary Science Department saw children observing live stick insects. Technology then extended the learning: with the help of AI, students “interviewed” a virtual stick insect named Spinella, blending science and imagination in a way that made learning unforgettable.

Learning for Life

From tennis courts to dance studios, science labs to music halls, our students engage in a rich tapestry of experiences. Events like the Junior School Music Showcase highlight the joy of working together, while our Semester 1 reports reflect not just academic progress but resilience, effort and personal growth.

In a world that moves fast, The McDonald College remains a place where values matter, where passion is nurtured, and where every child is supported to live with purpose, creativity and courage.

As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” At The McDonald College, those dreams are already taking flight.

We warmly invite you to visit The McDonald College to experience our Junior School in action and discover how passion, creativity and purpose are at the heart of everything we do.
