Southern Cross Catholic College (SCCC), the leading Catholic Prep to Year 12 college on the Redcliffe Peninsula, continues to innovate in its mission to provide holistic education and pastoral care.
This commitment to excellence has recently been exemplified by the development of a groundbreaking app, SCCC Pastoral Manager, designed by Mr Anthony Young, the College’s Mathematics Curriculum Leader.
The app revolutionises how the College tracks student behaviour, replacing a previously time-consuming and unreliable system with an efficient digital solution. Inspired by similar tools used in other schools, Mr Young collaborated with external experts to design an app tailored to SCCC’s unique needs.
“Our old system of tracking infringements and providing positive notices was time consuming and often broke. I’d heard of other schools using similar apps that they had developed and reached out to get guidance on how to construct it,” Mr Young said.
Having never built an app, he wasn’t deterred by the challenge before him.
“It seemed like a nice challenge and after meeting with teachers from other schools to learn how to adapt it myself, the process seemed simple enough,” he said.
The SCCC Pastoral Manager streamlines the process of recording both positive notices and infringements, ensuring staff can focus more on nurturing student growth rather than administrative tasks.
By enabling quick and accurate tracking of student progress, the app supports the College’s mission to nurture individual potential while maintaining a strong sense of community.
“Parents are appreciating the real-time communication between class and home and staff are happy because issues, both positive and negative, can be addressed at the time without adding to administrative burden,” Mr Young said.
“One of the biggest benefits is the ability to provide instant positive affirmations to students and parents. With a focus on the PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) program at Southern Cross, we can utilise the app to encourage a strong culture of positive behaviour.”
Using feedback from staff regarding features they would like to see in the app, Mr Young has been able to create a unique solution specifically for SCCC’s needs.
The SCCC Pastoral Manager is more than just an app; it is a testament to SCCC’s dedication to innovation in pastoral care and education. As a community unwavering in its pursuit of excellence, Southern Cross Catholic College aims to be a guiding light for students and families on their journey toward lifelong learning.
