A Meriden student has been selected for the Australian Team that will compete at the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
The Australian Olympic Committee has announced that 16-year-old Isabella Moon, a student from Meriden in Sydney, will be competing in the Biathlon events, including the 6km Women’s Sprint and the 10km Women’s Individual event, with a chance to join other nations in the Mixed Relay events.
Isabella is one of the first 13 athletes selected for the 31 person Australian team. The young Australians will take on more than 1880 athletes aged between 15 and 18 from 73 countries around the world in January 2020.
Isabella was 10-years-old when she first strapped on a pair of cross-country skis. Two years later, she trained for her first Biathlon event, combining her love for fast skiing with the skill of shooting at a target. In 2019, she became the Australian Biathlon Women’s Under 19 Sprint Champion (6km) and Women’s Under 19 Short Champion (7.5km).
Meriden Principal, Dr Julie Greenhalgh, congratulated Isabella on her amazing achievement.
“The Meriden community is extremely proud of Isabella’s determination to follow her passion and to take in her stride all the ups and downs that elite sporting pursuits bring,” she said.
“We will be cheering for Isabella and the rest of the Australian Youth Team as they set off on a wonderful Swiss adventure. We know Isabella will represent our country with grace and, whatever the results, she is already our champion.”
