The Lakes College house names are derived from the Aboriginal words from the Turrbal dialect of the Brisbane area for water, hoop pine, light and learning with these elements featuring dominantly in the college crest.
It was in July 2021 that we first approached our students about designing our house mascots that will be displayed proudly in the multi-purpose hall and around the college and will become a symbol of each House, bringing luck and unification. The designs have been created by one of the college’s very talented TLC staff members, Josiah Navarro who is also a talented graphic designer and illustrator, and is recognised as an accomplished toy designer in the world of collectables with his urban street look resin art toy collectable known as Junta.
Josiah said that it was essential that the students’ original artworks be considered and incorporated into the new designs and over the course of 2022, has met with our students who have designed each House Mascot and worked in collaboration with them to produce these images.
Kumbarchu
Nicholas T’s concept for Kumbarchu was a highly ferocious bear named Kumba. Nic gave Kumba red eyes and a red nose to give him a vicious appearance; he also added the hoop pine from our crest. The newly designed Kumbarchu mascot contains all aspects from Nic’s original artwork; Kumba’s intense red eyes and nose, along with TLC’s hoop pine wrapped around Kumba’s neck and shoulders, giving him a fierce appearance.
Kittabilla
Kittabilla was designed by Chloe W as a regal and powerful lion surrounded by the light emanating from the centre of our crest. In addition to the intense features and the light that surrounds the mane, a battle scar has been etched onto the lion’s eye to represent the challenges that are thrown our way which makes a person (or lion) stronger.
Tabbil
Chelsea O designed the Tabbil mascot as a manta ray surrounded by water. Manta Rays are one of the most fascinating and majestic sea creatures in the ocean and because of this, Josiah has said it was perhaps the most difficult mascot to develop as he wanted to give credit to the manta ray’s distinctive horn-shaped cephalic fins while maintaining the front-facing design that is consistent across the other mascots. Josiah and Chelsea have done an outstanding job creating this final design.
Nyani
Bree F designed the Nyani mascot as an owl with a very intense stare and flames emerging from its neck feathers. The Nyani mascot incorporates all of Bree’s design aspects with the overarching figure of the owl that represents learning. With piercing eyes and blazing red flames, the owl absolutely represents our desire for learning.
