At Kingswood College, gifted and highly able students are finding their intellectual home through an innovative program designed to challenge minds and foster exceptional talent.
The Student Enrichment and Extension at Kingswood (SEEK) program recognises students potential, empowering educators to identify and develop each student’s unique abilities beyond the standard curriculum. While differentiation is embedded across all learning areas, SEEK offers targeted opportunities for gifted students to connect, collaborate, and extend their learning alongside peers of similar ability.
A multi-faceted approach
The program is structured around four components: short programs, year-long specialised classes, academic competitions, and enrichment excursions and incursions. Participation is voluntary and by invitation.
Kingswood College offers a diverse range of programs spanning everything from Writers workshops and Mooting to Coding and Forensics. Programs are vertical across year levels wherever possible, allowing students to develop cross-age peer groups and learn from one another. Secondary teachers are invited to facilitate extension classes for motivated Junior school SEEK students. Students are encouraged to think critically, consider complex problems using higher thought processes of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Creating new and original ideas, divergent responses, and develop confidence for risk-taking.
Student Learning Journey Plans are developed to give students further control and ownership of their learning both inside and outside the classroom.
Real-world challenges
SEEK provides rich opportunities for students to explore their interests, challenge their thinking, and build real-world skills. Balancing academic rigour, creative exploration, and hands-on experiences, SEEK extends learning well beyond the classroom.
Programs range from investigative and scientific explorations to creative writing, digital design, and public speaking. Each encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and collaboration while allowing students to pursue their passions in meaningful ways.
Competition and challenge play an important role in SEEK. Students regularly take part in academic and creative events that connect them with peers from schools across Victoria and beyond, providing opportunities to apply their learning in new and inspiring contexts.
Emphasis on wellbeing
Recognising that intellectual ability doesn’t automatically translate to strong organisational skills or emotional wellbeing, SEEK incorporates comprehensive student support. There is a cooperative network monitoring each student’s academic progress and wellbeing.
Each student is monitored in terms of academic progress, organisation and wellbeing. As part of our Wellness Centre families have access to our Gifted and Talented Consultant.
Acceleration opportunities
For students whose abilities significantly exceed their age-level expectations, Kingswood offers acceleration pathways. Partial acceleration allows Years 1-9 students to undertake one or more subjects ahead while maintaining connections with same-age peers. Secondary students can take VCE subjects early when appropriate. Full acceleration may be considered after IOWA testing and consultation with all parties involved.
Looking ahead
The SEEK program continues to evolve based on student evaluations and facilitator feedback. Regular meetings among SEEK staff ensure offerings remain responsive to student needs.
For gifted students at Kingswood College, SEEK represents more than academic extension. It’s a community where exceptional minds are challenged, supported, and celebrated.
