Carey Baptist Grammar School, in collaboration with Making Media, have announced the launch of Carey Live, an innovative radio show which combines current students’ fresh perspectives with the rich experiences of its alumni.
The school said the project began with a day-long journalism workshop led by Ralph Barba of Making Media, bringing together 18 students representing the next generation of potential journalists and media professionals.
The workshop was designed to equip students with the skills they needed to conduct engaging and professional interviews. From understanding the nuances of journalism to mastering the technical aspects of radio broadcasting, students gained hands-on experience and learned tricks of the trade that were pivotal for the interviews that followed.
Following the workshop, students put their newly acquired skills to the test as they conducted 30-minute interviews with a selection of Carey alumni working in a range of industries including politics, superannuation and insurance, sport and human resources.
The theme of these interviews, Leadership Lab, focussed on exploring leadership development opportunities at school, alumni leadership journeys and perspectives on leadership in clubs and organisations. This theme offered current students valuable insights into how these alumni navigated leadership roles and made an impact in various spheres of their lives. From alumni sharing their leadership experiences and reflections, current students also had a window into the diverse paths their futures might take.
“I enjoyed working with people that I don’t really know across Middle School and Senior School, as well as learning about how to make a good podcast that can get young people excited,” Year 10 student, Aphrodite, said.
“The radio experience was amazing. Meeting new people and trying something different is always a great opportunity. I’ve learnt so much and gained a new skill and enjoyed sharing that knowledge with other people,” Year 9 student, Jackson, said.
The final interviews will be broadcast on LIVE FM radio later this year. This broadcast will not only highlight the achievements and stories of Carey’s alumni but also celebrate the talents and hard work of its students and all they learnt across the two days.
