Hillcrest Christian College has been recognised as a Middle Years School of Excellence by Adolescent Success, Australia’s leading middle schooling association.
This prestigious award reflects the dedication of Hillcrest’s educators to foster an engaging and supportive environment for adolescent development, especially through the College’s innovative SHIELD framework.
This structured approach offers distinct stages of learning from Junior through to Senior School, with the Middle Learning Community (MLC) specifically designed to address the complex developmental needs of students in Years 5-8.
The middle school years are foundational for a young person’s social, emotional, and academic growth. Research from the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) highlights that ages 10 to 14 represent a period of significant brain development, impacting decision-making, emotional regulation, and identity formation. Hillcrest’s approach recognises the importance of these years, supporting students with both independence and structured guidance, which is essential for forming friendships and building self-confidence.
One of the standout features of Hillcrest’s MLC is its Vertical Pastoral Groups, known as Life Groups. Within these groups, students are paired across Years 5-6 and Years 7-8, creating an inclusive environment that fosters a strong sense of community and belonging. Life Groups meet daily, including during morning interactions, assemblies, and chapel gatherings, and offer a unique connection point for social and emotional support.
This approach has proven beneficial in helping students establish long-lasting bonds that strengthen as they advance through Hillcrest’s Middle and Senior Learning Communities. Upon entering the Senior Learning Community (SLC), students continue within a vertical Life Group structure that extends across Years 9-12, allowing them to maintain and build upon the community ties fostered in middle school.
The MLC also promotes a balance of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and global development. Key programs like Design-Centred Learning (DCL) and the SECRET Skills framework encourage students to collaborate on real-world projects, building essential skills in critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork. DCL projects, structured through the ‘Design Thinking’ model, offer hands-on learning that prepares students for future challenges.
Hillcrest’s flexible learning spaces enable students to work collaboratively and engage in dynamic, differentiated learning experiences. With its real-world applications and partnerships, like the Gateway to Industry Schools Program (GISP) in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering, Hillcrest offers students industry exposure and authentic learning experiences that bring academic concepts to life.
Through a nurturing environment and innovative learning model, Hillcrest Christian College’s Middle Years Program sets a benchmark in fostering confident, resilient, and future-ready learners. This recognition from Adolescent Success underscores Hillcrest’s commitment to a holistic approach that not only focuses on academic achievement but also builds a foundation of personal growth, setting students on a successful trajectory toward their future pathways.
