The McDonald College in Sydney has celebrated several exciting performing arts and sporting achievements in recent months.

Among the highlights are 2018 Year 12 graduate Anthony Garcia being confirmed to star in the stage production of West Side Story, Year 8 student Ryan Yeates playing the lead role in the Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Musical, and The McDonald College’s Tennis Academy becoming a national winner.

West Side Story

Graduate Anthony Garcia has secured a 12-month contract playing the role of Chino in West Side Story, which will open in Melbourne in early 2019 and tour to China and Germany. It will also be performed at the Sydney Opera House from August until October 2019.

Anthony was a student at The McDonald College since his primary years and was Vice Captain in 2018, in addition to being a Musical Theatre student with a talent for tap. He will be the youngest cast member in West Side Story.

The McDonald College’s Tennis Academy

Voyager Tennis Academy and its dedicated players won the national 2018 Australian Schools Tennis Challenge in Albury in November 2018. The players took home the win at Day 4 of the national competition. It is the fourth year that Voyager has competed, however this is the first year it has won the competition.

The McDonald College described this as a huge milestone for its elite tennis program with Voyager, which was recognised in 2017 when it was awarded Most Outstanding School by Tennis Australia. The recent win ensures a place in the worldwide tournament, which takes place in Italy in 2019. More details will be released in coming months.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Musical

Year 8 student Ryan Yeates will be one of four young stars playing the lead role in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Australia. All four boys were told the good news via a golden ticket in a fake final audition. The musical will open at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney in January 2019. Ryan was also selected to play Charlie for the Opening Night debut on Friday 11 January. The production will run until May 2019.
