Barker College is located on Sydney’s north shore. It caters for boys in Kindergarten to Year 12 and girls in Years 10, 11 and 12. The School offers a broad-based education across its Prep, Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. The Prep and Junior Schools are places where boys can be boys and where curiosity is encouraged. Barker’s curriculum in the Middle School lays secure foundations for success in Senior years. Independent thought and learning are encouraged, as is a sense of justice, morality, respect and friendship. Barker’s Senior School is both co-educational and college-like, providing a bridge between School and University.
Every boy and girl at Barker has the opportunity to contribute his or her own thoughts and opinions. With the ability to offer such a broad curriculum, every student is enriched in his or her interest areas. In the Senior School, Barker’s students are offered the choice of 39 different courses for their HSC.
While the School regards academic work as being of primary importance, an extensive range of co-curricular activities is offered to cultivate students’ interests and to extend their abilities. The School aims to meet the needs of the individual and to cater for a wide range of recreational, cultural and sporting interests.
Two of Barker’s recent leavers have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships.
Barker’s approach to Pastoral Care stems from a fundamental belief that relationships are the key – the key to success in teaching and learning; and the key to effective and appropriate development as an individual; as well as the key to bringing staff and students together in the great enterprise of education.
Care is provided in different ways as the needs of students develop.
Athletics, Swimming, Rugby, Football, Cricket, Tennis, Cross-Country, Basketball, Hockey, Softball and Netball are the main sports played at Barker against other schools, although there are up to 20 sports available to students.
