Abbotsleigh is an Independent, Anglican, day and boarding school for girls. On 20 July 1885 Abbotsleigh opened its doors in a small terrace house at the top of Mount Street, North Sydney under the leadership of Miss Marian Clarke. Abbotsleigh empowers young women to embrace the world with confidence, competence and compassion. Each girl is encouraged to develop her potential in a caring Christian environment by fostering her pursuit of personal and academic excellence.

At Abbotsleigh, we believe that single sex education is more than separating boys from girls.

As an all girls’ school, we aim to capitalise on all that is known in scientific and social research about the markedly different ways in which girls learn.

Abbotsleigh is a place where the education of girls is valued, teachers are encouraged to press the boundaries and girls are excited about their learning. Our students are encouraged to take on academic challenges, express their thoughts and opinions and participate in new learning experiences in a manner that is not encumbered by stereotypical views. When learning within an all girls’ school environment, female role models abound in the form of teachers, peers and senior students.

Be it speakers, players, writers, singers, dancers or athletes, all girls are inspired to achieve through female mentors. Abbotsleigh encourages girls to grow into leaders by creating leadership opportunities in the classroom, the science lab, on the sports field, on the stage and in all aspects of life at Abbotsleigh.

Our classrooms are technology-rich learning environments. Student laptops are used to enhance research, collaboration and engagement. Virtual classrooms provide students with a wealth of enriching 21st century learning experiences. A spirit of inquiry and innovative thinking are hallmarks of an Abbotsleigh education.

The Kindergarten to Year 12 Service-Learning program links specific learning outcomes with genuine opportunities for service in the community. The School has a vision for each girl to be a courageous, constructive and compassionate world citizen with a will to serve.

A rigorous, broad-based curriculum, delivered by teachers who are subject experts, is the key to offering the highest quality academic program.  Students establish a strong base from which to build their knowledge and skills by studying a broad range of subjects in the middle years and then choosing from the more specialised curriculum of the Senior College. Each girl is encouraged to strive for excellence by taking responsibility for her own learning to attain her personal and academic best. In this endeavour, students and teachers work collaboratively to ensure that the best possible learning outcomes are attained. The curriculum program delivered to our girls prepares them well for tertiary education, the world of work and effective and ethical participation in a globally networked society.

AbbSchool, Abbotsleigh’s extended tuition program is made up of two important areas within the Abbotsleigh community: extended tuition – encompassing dance, tennis, sport, swimming, creative arts and lifestyle courses, and the school holiday program, which offers a range of fun sporting, creative and academic programs to entertain and enrich students from age five through to the teenage years.

Adults are not overlooked. The AbbSchool adult program offers a range of activities including aqua aerobics, lap swimming, Zumba, yoga and private or group tennis lessons.
